Chapter 14

A couple of minutes later the door opened, and in walked Doctor Janice Fuller followed by a pair of armed guards. She was a stocky woman, and her face bore an expression somewhere between a scowl, and a sneer.

She had on a white lab coat, but somehow the look was more reminiscent of a butcher than a scientist. Under the coat were shirt collar, and tightly-knotted tie. The hem of a brown wool skirt could be seen above plain brown, flat-heeled shoes. Her hair had been dark but was now heavily streaked with gray. She parted it to the side in a short, severe cut.

“Are you in charge here?” Her anger was aimed at Cavendish who leaned back in her chair, and put her palms on the table.

“Sit down, Doctor,” she said, her voice full of calm authority.

“I will do no such thing. I demand to be released immediately. You have no right to hold me against my will.”

“Sit down, or I will have you handcuffed to the chair.”

The doctor glanced over her shoulder at the two soldiers. She gave an angry snort, but took the seat opposite me. Cavendish asked the soldiers to wait outside.

Fuller was down but not out. She flung her arms dramatically across her chest.

“Whoever you are, I have nothing to say to you. I demand my immediate release, or to speak to my solicitor.” Cavendish let the silence that followed drag on for long moments. She took a deep, resigned breath as if dealing with a recalcitrant child, and shook her head slowly. I imagined it had been some time since the doctor had met someone she couldn’t bully or intimidate.

“You misunderstand your rights,” said Cavendish, her voice slow and cold. “This investigation is under the purview of the United Kingdom Security Services. We are not bound by the same rules as the ordinary police force.” She emphasized the word ordinary, as if to underline the seriousness of current proceedings.

“This interview will have a direct bearing on what happens to you next, so I would advise you to consider your responses carefully. If you cooperate, and I am satisfied you are telling the truth, you will be handed over to local law enforcement. I understand they wish to speak to you regarding the murder of Professor Alise Bengren. Your solicitor can then be present during questioning.

“If you fail to assist with this investigation then under the provisions of the Official Secrets Act you will be taken from here to a military prison until such time as you change your mind.” She paused to let her words sink in. “Are we clear?” It was bullshit, but coming from Cavendish it was damn convincing.

Doctor Fuller scowled, but said nothing. Cavendish continued.

“What can you tell us about Batch 27 Alpha? Don’t try to be evasive,” she warned. “We have Professor Bengren’s notes.”

The doctor drew in a breath, and let it out slowly. Her initial bravado was replaced by resignation.

“Batch 27 Alpha had the potential to realize all our goals,” she said.
